Hospital management software, built for India

EMR vs EHR vs HMS: what is the difference?

Four acronyms vendors use loosely, explained in plain English, with what each means for an Indian hospital.

EMR, EHR, HMS, HIS: vendors use these terms loosely, and often interchangeably. They are related, but they are not the same thing, and the difference matters when you are deciding what to buy. Here is each one in plain English.

EMR: electronic medical record

An electronic medical record is the digital version of a patient’s chart inside one provider: history, allergies, vitals, notes, prescriptions and results. It replaces the paper file. The key word is inside: an EMR is mainly used by the clinic or hospital that created it.

EHR: electronic health record

An electronic health record holds the same kind of information, but is built to be shared across providers. When a patient is referred to a specialist or moves cities, their record can go with them. In India, ABDM is what makes this possible: records are linked to the patient’s ABHA and shared with another provider when the patient consents. (See what ABDM is.)

In short: an EMR is a record a provider keeps; an EHR is a record that follows the patient.

HMS: hospital management system

A hospital management system runs the whole hospital, not just the chart: registration and appointments, the OPD and IPD, beds and nursing, lab, radiology, pharmacy, billing and claims, stores, staff and reports. A good HMS includes an EMR or EHR at its centre, so clinical work and billing share one record. “HMS” is simply the short form of hospital management system (or software). More in what a hospital management system is.

HIS: hospital information system

A hospital information system means much the same as an HMS. The term is more common with larger hospitals and government tenders. In practice, ask what the system does rather than what it is called.

Which one do you need?

  • A solo doctor or small clinic needs an EMR with appointments, prescriptions and billing: in other words, clinic management software.
  • A hospital needs an HMS whose record is an EHR: one record across every department, shareable through ABDM with consent.
  • Everyone in India should check that the record uses open standards such as FHIR, so it can be shared and so your data is never locked in.

Where Carexa OS fits

Carexa OS is a hospital management system built on one FHIR R4-native patient record. Every department works on the same record, and with the patient’s consent it is shared through ABDM. See EMR and EHR software for what the record includes.
